Emma Talbot

In Emma Talbot's multimedia works, the ghostly is present to a bizarre degree. The work of the artist, who was born in 1969 in the English Midlands, deals with an outside world that disturbs and shakes our inner world. Her starting point is subjective, intuitive drawing, from which she creates paintings on silk, sculptural ensembles and film animations. In the Garage project space, the artist shows a painted silk hanging over thirteen metres long entitled Ghost Calls. It depicts female ghosts inhabiting a counter-world, moving through a psychological landscape and recognising themselves as part of the process of life and death in nature.

Formally, the artist combines figurative elements with ornaments and patterns, as well as her own texts. In densely interwoven, dreamlike sequences, her paintings describe our present, a time of disruption and extremes that influence and endanger our lives, our environment and our future in many ways. For the first time in Vienna, Emma Talbot will also be showing her animated film about the seagrass meadows of Scotland and their contribution to the climate balance. The film was made at the invitation of WWF and ArtWise. To compensate for the loss of seagrass meadows, seawilding projects have been launched in several countries around the world. Animated extracts from Emma Talbot's drawings introduce us to this habitat, which is worth protecting for a large number of marine species. This exhibition is the first time that Emma Talbot's work has been shown in Austria.

About the Artist
Emma Talbot was born in Stourbridge in 1969 and studied at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art in London. The artist lives in London and Italy and is the winner of the 8th Max Mara Art Prize for Women. In 2022 she was included in the main exhibition The Milk of Dreams at the Venice Biennale. Her work has been exhibited at Whitechapel Gallery, London, Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia, Beiqiu Museum of Contemporary Art, Nanjing, Victoria Miro, London, and Eastside Projects, Birmingham, Kunsthaus Pasquart, Biel, Arcadia Missa, New York, KM21, The Hague, and Turner Contemporary, Margate, Kent, Freud Museum London, Lisson Gallery, London, Galerie Onrust, Amsterdam, Petra Rinck Galerie, Düsseldorf, Neuer Aachener Kunstverein and Tate St Ives.
